Who Owns OpenAI?
OpenAI was founded by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, Wojciech Zaremba, and John Schulman in December 2015. Initially, it was a non-profit. However, to attract necessary capital, it transitioned into a “capped-profit” model in 2019, becoming for-profit with a social impact focus. Elon Musk no longer has formal involvement with OpenAI.
It’s also noteworthy that OpenAI primarily uses a partnership model, so exact ownership is complex. Still, it’s driven by its mission: to ensure artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity.
